The Knowledge Forum (TKF) and Faculty of Social Sciences of Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) organised a panel discussion on “Sustainable Energy Narratives and Local Communities in Sindh” at SMIU campus on 28th February, 2024.

Mr. Sohail Sangi, Senior Journalist and Faculty Member of the Federal Urdu University Karachi, Ms. Mehwish, Program Manager, Policy Research Institute for Equitable Development (PRIED) and Mr. Yasir Darya of Climate Action Centre were the panellists, while Ms. Zeenia Shaukat, Director, The Knowledge Forum, Karachi, moderated the session.

The speakers highlighted the plight of local communities affected by developments and said that people suffer more than they benefit from the development schemes.

Citing the example of Thar, they said the local communities have not been given their required rights, even though they have been provided with clean drinking water. They said that the same situation is prevailing in other areas of the province.

They suggested that the government must take care of local communities while initiating development projects.

Dr. Zahid Ali Channar, Convener of the GRC and Dr. Sana Shahid, Assistant Professor at SMIU also shared their views. In the end, Dr. Zahid Ali Channar presented shields to the guests.
