Earlier this year, The Knowledge Forum (TKF) met with MPA Rehan Bandukda, Chairperson of the Energy Committee, Sindh Assembly, to discuss the urgent challenges of energy access and the pathway towards a just and inclusive energy transition in Sindh.
The meeting focused on the province’s energy landscape and the need to address persistent electricity access challenges that continue to affect communities across Sindh. Participants noted that despite contributing significantly to Pakistan’s energy production through its coal and gas resources, many parts of Sindh still experience limited and unreliable access to electricity, impacting livelihoods, economic opportunities, and resilience to extreme weather conditions.
During the discussion, TKF highlighted the importance of accelerating the adoption of clean and renewable energy solutions while ensuring that the transition benefits all segments of society. Particular emphasis was placed on preparing workers for emerging green jobs, strengthening technical and vocational education, and building the skills needed to support a rapidly evolving energy sector.
The conversation also underscored the importance of inclusive energy governance, including greater representation of women in energy-related policymaking and decision-making processes. Participants agreed that equitable participation is essential to ensuring that energy policies effectively respond to the needs of diverse communities.
As community-led solarisation continues to expand across Pakistan, the meeting explored the need for supportive policy and legislative frameworks that can facilitate a fair and people-centred transition to clean energy. Discussions highlighted the importance of ensuring that renewable energy opportunities remain accessible and affordable, particularly for underserved communities.
The meeting concluded with a shared recognition that constructive engagement between policymakers, civil society organisations, and local communities is critical to advancing clean, affordable, and sustainable energy solutions for Sindh’s future.
