TKF Meets PPP Sindh President Nisar Ahmed Khuhro to Advocate for a Just and Sustainable Energy Transition

The Knowledge Forum (TKF), accompanied by a representative from its partner organisation, the Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research (PILER), met with Pakistan Peoples Party (Sindh) President Nisar Ahmed Khuhro at his residence in DHA Karachi on June 6, 2026 to discuss country’s energy challenges and the need for a just and sustainable energy transition. The meeting was also attended by Peoples Labour Bureau President Habibuddin Junaidi.

During the meeting, TKF presented the Charter of Demands jointly developed by the Alliance for Climate Justice and Clean Energy (ACJCE) and the Pakistan Renewable Energy Coalition (PREC). The Charter highlights key policy recommendations aimed at accelerating renewable energy adoption, strengthening energy security, promoting climate resilience, and ensuring that the transition to clean energy benefits all segments of society.

TKF Director Ms. Zeenia Shaukat underscored Sindh’s significant renewable energy potential, particularly in solar and wind power, and emphasized the importance of utilizing these resources to address Pakistan’s ongoing energy challenges. She noted that geopolitical tensions and recent developments in the Middle East have contributed to higher global oil prices, increasing the cost of fuel, electricity, and gas and placing additional financial pressure on households and businesses across Pakistan.

The discussion focused on the need to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels, expand investment in renewable energy infrastructure, and create policies that support affordable and reliable energy access for citizens. Participants highlighted the role of clean energy in enhancing energy security, reducing electricity costs, and supporting sustainable economic development.

Mr. Nisar Ahmed Khuhro acknowledged Sindh’s leading contribution to Pakistan’s energy sector and agreed that the province’s vast solar and wind resources should be fully harnessed to strengthen energy security, lower electricity costs, and help address the challenge of prolonged load-shedding.

Representatives from PILER, including Mr. Habibuddin Junaidi and Mr. Abbas Haider, also highlighted the difficulties faced by workers and low-income communities who continue to bear the economic and social consequences of rising energy costs and persistent power outages. They emphasized the importance of ensuring that energy reforms prioritize the needs of vulnerable populations and promote equitable access to affordable electricity.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to advancing renewable energy solutions, strengthening collaboration between policymakers and civil society, and supporting a clean, affordable, and sustainable energy future for Pakistan.
